Quotations on Baha’i Faith

Commentary by Ricardo B Serrano: What basically attracted me two decades ago to Baha’i faith founded by Baha’ullah (Glory of God) is its love-based unity in diversity (oneness of God, humanity and religion) teachings rather than fear-based teachings of other religions on heaven and hell. Its prayer and meditation is spiritually in harmony with Atma (Soul) Yoga teachings with its meditation and Qigong books.

Abdu’l Baha: The Master

With thanks to my meditation teacher Mike Nator, a Filipino Baha’i, who introduced me to Baha’i Faith two decades ago for healing and spiritual awakening.

People in the Philippines and other parts of the world, out of desperation in finding the right religion, have fallen victim by choosing fanatical religions of false prophets for the salvation of their souls. My choice for the present-day religion that is based on truth and non-violence and answers my questions why are we here? what is heaven or hell? is the Baha’i faith founded by Baha’ullah whose unity teachings are harmonious with the teachings of Atma (Soul) Yoga.

For me personally, Baha’ullah, (Glory of God in English), is the heart-opening personification of the liberating energy of unconditional love, acceptance, compassion, inner smile and expanded consciousness as I have experienced him through the pillar of Light and Cosmic Christ consciousness during my sitting and standing meditation (qigong), and energy healing practices.

Thy name is my healing

Baha’is the world over come from all religious backgrounds: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian, animist, and non-religious. Yet they study a common set of sacred writings, observe a unifying code of religious laws, and look to a single international administrative system for continuing guidance.

The following quotes on Baha’i faith about the question “Was Albert Einstein a Pantheist or Deist?” which was answered by B Knott Wildered:

I have more than a clue. Albert Einstein was very aware of the Baha’i Faith and was greatly influenced by it. The more one knows about each, the more obvious becomes the connection. Albert was more a Deist than Pantheist, I am quite sure, though neither really fit. To a Baha’i, God is an “Unknowable Essence.” Compare that definition to your first quote. I will have to do some searching to find a quote from the Baha’i writings that in my view will adequately reflect the second, but rest assured I have read several and know for a certainty they exist. I will try to find them, or at least one good one, before this question is closed, though I cannot guarantee success due to many things I have that need to be done. But Baha’u’llah (1817 – 1892), Prophet/founder of the Baha’i Faith had an influence on many more than just Einstein.

At least one of the encyclicals from a previous to the current Pope is virtually a word for word copy of Baha’i writings that were published decades earlier, and there is speculation in some circles that that Pope was trying to get the Catholic Church prepared to accept Baha’u’llah. Baha’u’llah himself wrote a letter to the Pope is the 1860’s, so for that and many other reasons it is a given that the Catholic Church is very aware of the Baha’i Faith. Mahatma Gandhi was quoted as saying, “The Baha’i Faith is a solace to humankind.” (Bombay Chronicle, May 24, 1944). Others are Helen Keller, “We would all be better off if we studied the philosophy of Baha’u’llah.” Arnold Toynbee “If there is a religion for the future it is the Baha’i Faith,” and though this may not be an exact quote is very close, Leo Tolstoy described the Baha’i Faith as “the highest and purest form of religious teaching.” And it was of Baha’u’llah that Tolstoy wrote: “We spend our lives trying to unlock the mystery of the universe, but there was a Turkish prisoner, (Baha’u’llah in Akka, Palestine) who had the key”.

Want references to the Big Bang long before Edwin Hubble made his now famous observation? Quantum physics and much more long before they were posited by the mind of science? Look to the Baha’i scripture.

May I offer these in case I do not find in time the one regarding the second quote? I have included them in other answers I have offered in this forum so are readily available.

Religion and Science are inter-twined with each other and cannot be separated. These are the two wings with which humanity must fly. One wing is not enough. Every religion which does not concern itself with Science is mere tradition, and that is not the essential. Therefore science, education and civilization are most important necessities for the full religious life.

(Abdu’l-Baha, Abdu’l-Baha in London, p. 28)

If any religion rejected Science and knowledge, that religion was false. Science and Religion should go forward together; indeed, they should be like two fingers of one hand.

(Abdu’l-Baha, Abdu’l-Baha in London, p. 70)

Sciences of former ages and philosophies of the past are useless today.

(Abdu’l-Baha, Baha’i World Faith – Abdu’l-Baha Section, p. 224)

The fourth teaching of Bahá’u’lláh is the agreement of religion and science. God has endowed man with intelligence and reason whereby he is required to determine the verity of questions and propositions. If religious beliefs and opinions are found contrary to the standards of science they are mere superstitions and imaginations; for the antithesis of knowledge is ignorance, and the child of ignorance is superstition. Unquestionably there must be agreement between true religion and science. If a question be found contrary to reason, faith and belief in it are impossible and there is no outcome but wavering and vacillation.

(Abdu’l-Baha, Baha’i World Faith – Abdu’l-Baha Section, p. 239)

[ Note the following paragraph was written in 1890. Einstein was born in 1879. — BKW]

Strange and astonishing things exist in the earth but they are hidden from the minds and the understanding of men. These things are capable of changing the whole atmosphere of the earth and their contamination would prove lethal. (14)

It is noteworthy that in 1911 in Paris in the course of a conversation with Viscount Arawaka, the Japanese Ambassador to Spain, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá spoke these words:

Scientific discoveries have increased material civilization. There is in existence a stupendous force, as yet, happily, undiscovered by man. Let us supplicate God, the Beloved, that this force be not discovered by science until spiritual civilization shall dominate the human mind. In the hands of men of lower material nature, this power would be able to destroy the whole earth.'(15)

In a previous volume[1] there is a reference to the words of Bahá’u’lláh concerning the discovery of alchemy, the transmutation of elements, which He links with the coming of a great calamity for the whole world. It is known that the transmutation of elements.

Quotations on heaven and hell

Baha’i teachings state that there is no such physical place as heaven or hell, and emphasize the eternal journey of the soul towards oneness with God. They explain that references to “heaven” and “hell” in the Holy Scriptures of other religions are to be understood symbolically, describing states of nearness to and distance from God in this world and in the realms beyond. When we die, the condition of our souls determines our experience of the afterlife.

Heaven and hell are conditions within our own being. – Shoghi Effendi, Lights of Guidance, p. 209

The essence of all the prophets of God is one and the same. – Baha’ullah

Meditation is the key for opening the doors of mysteries. – Abdul’Baha

Man, in reality, is a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy. – Baha’i Writings

And with Thy love in my heart all the world’s afflictions can in no wise alarm me. – Baha’ullah

– Excerpts from Dedication, page 3, Oneness with Shiva

Purpose of Religion

No lasting transformation can be effected without unity and agreement and the perfect means for engendering fellowship and union is true religion. – Abdul’ Baha, The Secret of Divine Civilization

It must unite all hearts and cause wars and disputes to vanish from the face of the earth, give birth to spirituality, and bring life and light to each heart. – Abdul’ Baha, Paris Talks

If religion becomes a cause of dislike, hatred and division, it were better to be without it, and to withdraw from such a religion would be a truly religious act. – Abdul’ Baha, Paris Talks

Any religion which is not a cause of love and unity is no religion. – Abdul’ Baha, Paris Talks

About the Baha’i Faith

“The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” – Baha’ullah

In just over one hundred years the Baha’i Faith has grown from an obscure movement in the Middle East to the second most widespread world religion after Christianity. With some 8 million adherents in virtually every corner of the globe – including people from every nation, ethnic group. culture, profession, and social or economic class – it is probably the most diverse organized body of people on the planet today.

About Baha’u’llah

Its founder, Baha’ullah, taught that there is one God, Who progressively reveals His Will to humanity. Each of the great religions brought by the Messengers of God – Abraham and Moses, Krishna, Buddha, Zoroaster, Jesus, Muhammad, the Bab – represents a successive stage in the spiritual development of the human race. Baha’ullah, the most recent Messenger in this line, has brought teachings that address the moral and spiritual challenges of today’s world.

The Baha’i Faith teaches that there is only one human race and that religion should be a source of unity; condemns all forms of prejudice and racism; upholds the equality of women and men; confirms the importance and value of marriage and the family; establishes the need for the independent investigation of the truth; insists on access to education for all; asserts the essential harmony between science and religion; declares the need to eliminate extremes of wealth and poverty; and exalts work done in a spirit of service to the level of worship.

Baha’is believe that religion should be a dynamic force that raises the individual, family, and community to new spiritual heights. To this end Baha’is all around the world work to create an atmosphere of love and unity in their own lives, in their families, and in their communities.
