Photobiomodulation: A new and promising way to enhance brain function
by Dr. Lew Lim, ND (Dec. 4, 2017)

As is increasingly evident, there are multiple methods aimed at enhancing brain function.

Brain training and mindfulness practices are commonly used. Substance-based methods are popular too, including hallucinogens in the form of plant extracts, and drugs. Same as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS): All of these are promising but have been challenged – for example, the reproducibility of electrical-based stimulation results is increasingly questioned.

Within this context, photobiomodulation (PBM) – low level light therapy (LLLT) – is attracting much attention these days as a promising new way to enhance brain functioning. PBM involves delivering light to the cells (including neurons) that modulate tissue functions.

The Scientific Case for Photobiomodulation (PBM)

There are several factors supporting PBM for brain enhancement:

  • Its fundamental mechanisms of action, based on photons modifying mitochondrial functions, are well-researched. Mitochondria health is increasingly recognized as fundamental in medicine.
  • The photon is non-chemical, non-synthetic and non-mechanical. When activating the mitochondria in small doses, it modulates tissues without major side effects. Its life-harnessing activity appears to be a legacy from early life on earth that started with photosynthesis.
  • The effects of transcranial PBM have been found to be systemic and generally agnostic in treating the different types of brain insults.
  • Emerging evidence are presenting the effect of PBM on the electrophysiology potential of the brain as well as enhanced blood perfusion, filling some of the earlier gaps in the understanding and validation of brain PBM mechanisms.

Multiple scientific reviews, referenced below, have identified a number of neurological, psychiatric and neurodevelopment conditions that may in principle be addressed by transcranial PBM, from “chemo-brain” to depression and Parkinson’s Disease. With PBM delivered to the forehead in a controlled study, for example, subjects demonstrated improved memory and mood. When the right forehead was treated, it improved attention biased modification (ABM) in people with depression. Directing near infrared (NIR) light to the brain also improves reaction time. Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has measured increased cerebral oxygenation in the brain after a single transcranial PBM, which provides an explanation for the increased performance observed. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) maps have also shown increased electrophysiology power.

In summary, PBM appears to have positive effect on both healthy and diseased brains.

Because neural tissues contain large amounts of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, brain photobiomodulation has great potential for brain wellness. Current research shows that improving mental acuity through enhanced cerebral metabolic function and blood flow, stimulating neurogenesis and providing neuroprotection are the most important effects of brain PBM therapy.

PBM can help modulate the brain in several ways:

  1. Blood perfusion – more so in the areas surrounding the source of light
  2. Activation of neuronal repair, restoration, growth and reduction of inflammation
  3. Increase in neurotransmitter activity
  4. Beneficial modification of microglia activity
  5. Entrainment of selective brain oscillations
  6. Potential for modulating focal synchrony/coherency

As discussed, delivery of NIR can improve reaction time and performance. High frequency in the beta and gamma ranges have been associated with memory and mental performance, although temporary. High level meditators also present persistent gamma with high power. It is therefore reasonable to assume that entrainment with gamma frequency pulses can modulate the brain for high performing mental states in mindfulness.

Growing evidence seems to support the case that PBM can enhance brain function, whether the brain is in perfectly healthy shape or has suffered insults. However, there is much to be explored. Specifically, because brains seem to respond to PBM in very specific ways, we should be able to personalize treatments and selectively alter mental states in the future.

In summary, these are the reasons why I view photobiomodulation as a new and very promising way to enhance brain function.

Intranasal Light Therapy

According to scientific research, intranasal light therapy with 633 nm, stimulates the mitochondria to produce more ATP, and triggers the release of nitric oxide (NO), a powerful cell signaler and activator. NO sends “blood flow signals” that relax arterial walls, dilate the blood vessels, and improve the flow of blood and oxygen everywhere in your body, boosting its ability to heal obesity, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, stroke, arthritis, high blood pressure, and of course diabetes.

Intranasal light therapy is also used to reduce anxiety and pain, improve mood and performance, and enter higher meditative states of consciousness by stimulating Qi in the acupuncture meridians improving the Qi flow in the Wei Qi field restoring homeostasis systemically.

Light energy (Qi) is absorbed by the blood vessels in the nasal cavity via intranasal light therapy. According to Chinese medicine, blood provides a carrier for the movement of Qi and nourishes it. Sufficient blood and good blood circulation is essential to maintaining strong Qi for true healing and enlightenment. Light is truly the medicine of the future.

Photobiomodulation is a form of light therapy that utilizes non-ionizing light sources, including lasers, light emitting diodes, and/or broadband light, in the visible (400 – 700 nm) and near-infrared (700 – 1100 nm) electromagnetic spectrum. Light energy is Qi. Light therapy is a form of Qi-healing.

Intranasal light therapy devices consist of three models: 633 Red (LED) and 655 Prime (low-level laser) for systemic use, and 810 Infrared for brain stimulation.

Acupuncture, herbs, diet, exercise, and Qigong are adjuncts to intranasal light therapy.

CoQ10 is key to our heart health. It’s crucial to protecting your mitochondria. It is key to delaying or preventing mitochondrial depletion. Ubiquinol supplementation with Magnesium is best integrated with intranasal light therapy for healing diseases.

The following scientific article from New Scientist shows the basic health benefits of meditation that have been known by the ancient meditation and Qigong masters of holistic – body, mind, spirit – eastern medical traditions for thousands of years and are just now promoted in the west for good health:

Before you dismiss meditation as some “new age silliness” consider this: It actually activates genes that perform beneficial tasks in your body. And it deactivates genes that can make you sick.

Breathe deep

It’s no secret these days that stress is more dangerous than we used to think. In fact, it’s a killer. But when you stimulate your vagus nerve, you reduce inflammation and activate a neurotransmitter that relaxes your brain and body.

And you can easily stimulate your vagus nerve by taking several slow, deep breaths. If you do that with your eyes closed while making a conscious effort to calm your mind… well, then you’re meditating.

Studies have shown that meditation may be the super pill we’ve all been searching for. It supports immune function, relieves depression, alleviates insomnia, and even helps control blood pressure. It also reduces levels of cortisol, the “stress hormone.”

In a new study, meditation activated genes that do three things…
1) Boost insulin production
2) Keep DNA stable
3) Improve efficiency of mitochondria, the cell powerhouses

But meditation also deactivated genes that play a role in inflammation.

In subjects who were new to meditation, gene changes occurred within minutes. But in those who had practiced meditation for years, evidence showed genetic benefits before meditation sessions even began.

It turns out, that long-term practice had actually locked benefits in place.

No doubt, meditation can be a challenge for those of us with Type A personalities that start getting our to-do list together in our heads. But this new research certainly makes it worth another look. The worst side effect? People may think you’re a new age hippie.
